Cummins to build engines for Nissan pickups

So what does everyone think about this?

    http://www.wdrb.com/story/23197438/cummins-to-build-engines-for-nissan-pickups-800-jobs-expected

It's official: Nissan Vice President of Sales and Marketing Fred Diaz announced that the new relationship with Cummins Inc. will begin with the next-generation Nissan Titan full-size half-ton pickup truck. Nissan has not announced whether that will be a 2015 or 2016 model, but it's good to hear news like this because it implies Nissan is serious about significantly improving the worst-selling half-ton in the U.S. marketplace.

"We have done our homework on the next-generation Titan. Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn't require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup," Diaz said in a statement. "There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0-liter V-8 turbo-diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration."
We've been reporting since May 2009 that Cummins was committed to light-duty diesel engines, whether it partnered with Ram Truck or another manufacturer. In fact, PickupTrucks.com had heard that several of the half-ton truck makers were getting ready to offer light-duty diesel options in the mid-2000s, but bankruptcies and the recession put many of those product plans on hold.

Previously, Cummins partnered with Nissan and the federal government to study the feasibility and fuel economy results of a small turbo-diesel engine in a large truck. The U.S. Department of Energy delivered the findings on the Cummins Atlas engine project in a 2012 report. The high-tech 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder was reported to offer 385 pounds-feet of torque and more than 26 mpg city/highway combined (which would likely fit in the smaller Frontier as well).
Nissan did not offer many details about the new partnership; however, the engine slated for the new Titan will not be the smaller four-cylinder, but the completely new, much bigger light-duty diesel 5.0-liter V-8, with another version slated for the commercial market. By our calculations, given what Cummins has been doing with new smaller and smarter variable-fin turbochargers, we'd guess the torque ratings could be somewhere in the 550 pounds-feet range and horsepower more than 300.

Honestly, I really wonder why Ram didn't seal the deal with Cummins for their half ton diesel. Since '89 (duh), the only diesel we know and love has been under the hood of Ram pickups, why in the hell would they stop now? Even taking into consideration the good reputation that VM Motori has, I'm pretty sure we can all agree we'd rather have the Cummins. I think this new engine is going to be great, but most will shy away from buying a Titan just for the engine. Not to bash Japanese trucks, but when it comes to that matter... I (and obviously many others) look no further than American made. Titans have never been that great of trucks. If anything, I expected the Tundra to get a diesel before the Titan did. I'm sure it'll appeal to a very select group of people, and I'm also sure it'll steal some sales from Ram. I hope Nissan knows what they are getting into... Hopefully it's not the same drivetrain except with a diesel powerplant in place of the gas counterpart. I don't see that going to well. All in all... I'm mostly in awe? This was very unexpected. I knew the Titan would get a diesel engine eventually, but I never expected them to get it from Cummins. I wonder how Ram feels about the matter.

i have been looking more and more into this.

1 will have egr DPF and require DEF. if this is based more for a homeowner than someone who knows and loves diesel engines it will give a bad reputation because of their lack of knowledge

2 i killed a 2009 nissan truck with 700 pounds. not dropped in but rather set into the bed. it tweaked the frame and offset how the back axle sat. insurance totaled out the truck because the frame machine could not get it straight

that said i hope they beef the truck up a lot. nissan may dig their grave here if that is the case.

3 i do not think nissan will educate the consumer on the diesel engines enough to prevent issues. I forsee SADLY cummins getting a poor reputation out of this.

4 this is the first i have heard of a V layout cummins rather than inline. I have my questions here. is this like the difference in homeowner and work grade?

    5 Rumors.....
1 using a ram frame and drivetrain with v8 cummins
2 rumor of a DPF EGR-less version ( This I would like to see)
    3 Price less than 35K

My thoughts yeah its a cummins, in a hunk of junk truck. I have a feeling it will only cause problems for nissan who does not know what kind of power a few mods and a tuner will do and will cause cummins issues in the regards of reputation.

Some of these responses sound like stuff from 20+ years ago when Dodge make the decision to put Cummins engines in their trucks! I believe Nissan will be up to the task. Improvements will be made to their current trucks to handle the additional towing loads that people will put on them with this new motor. I just don't think it will take as long as it did Dodge to do upgrades. How long did it take Dodge to bring their brakes up to their competitors? Or, how long did it take them to build a real crew cap truck with the Diesel engine? Now I understand what was going on a few months ago when I spotted a Nissan in Tempe, AZ with a large gooseneck trailer and a couple of escort trucks rolling down the road. And, think of all the new forum members there will be as they will have Cummins motors also! The main issues will be the Nissan Mechanics getting up to speed on this new engine. I remember being at the local Cummins shop years ago when a service advisor from a Dodge dealer called and said that putting a Cummins motor was the worst thing that Dodge ever did. So, there will be some who don't thing this is a good idea, time will tell. At least Nissan doesn't have to worry about changing hands and their economic outlook like Chrysler did.

    Good Points by all.

Remember Al, Nissan has a better reputation for few problems than Toyoyoyo. That said, they will probably get it right.

With the advent of Can Buss, the information centers will do all the education the company wants the owner to know. The average owner will just drive it. You can only hope they have enough sense to put diesel in the tank. The wives are going to be a problem. They won't want to pump their own fuel because of the smell. GET OVER IT! The diesels will run cleaner and are a good solution to global warming. Think about how hot a gasser runs.

Al. . . Except for the smoke, my 08 was below the standards. I bet my 03 is too. That doesn't smoke at all. As a matter of fact, after 700 miles this week, I can still see where you fingered the soot in my pipe 3 weeks ago. And my oil is STILL ALMOST CLEAR on the dipstick. WOW! Who knows what would happen if I put a high flow CAT Converter on there. It aint gonna happen. I got as High as 24.5 Hand Calced on this trip. The oil has over 2000 miles on it now. I'm doing something right

In other words, I can make them run cleaner with less crap on them. Not to mention fewer problems.

An in line diesel is STILL the best engine for durability and performance. V engines don't have the life spans in most cases. I have to say Cummins has been sliding in some areas of their engineering. I really think the DPF's were an over kill and the answer the EPA wanted to hear. Making them run cleaner from the start, like the 24V in 03 is a real good start. Don't forget too, the smaller displacements has a play in running them cleaner.

Having read up on the Dodge 1500 Diesel, it has a proven track record. Complicated little sucker, but been running all over Europe and Russia for about 5 years now. I have a feeling Dodge is still going to have the edge over the Titan.

Dodge surely drpped the ball on this one. The 1500 Rams should have got that 5 liter Cummins V8 instead of them chosing the Italian 3 liter V6. What happened to them using the 3 liter Mercedes turbo diesel? I know a few people that loved them in their Jeeps. Too bad Cummins did not design an inline 6 with around 4 liter displacement. I never liked any of the previous Cummins V8s. Hopefully the new V8s will be better than their old ones.
