    2nd to 3rd Gear Flare, 47re

Hey guys, I recently had my transmission rebuilt by a local shop who has been known for doing good work. I bought a transmission with all the parts and suncoast triple disk converter which were all slightly used, but were not in long before a 5 speed conversion from the guy I bought it from. Well the shop rebuild everything but the torque converter which was externally fine and the fluid inside was fine. After getting it back, there was a 2nd to 3rd gear "flare" where the engine revs up before locking into 3rd. Everything else is fine, but this is very annoying. I took it back and he changed the valve body around a little (which had a shift kit in it). Still does it... Bands were up to specs. Any suggestions? Thanks

valve body possibly, or a sluggish servo. I suggest you take it back. The 47 was partially computer controled like the earlier 518 but with more upgrades.

I am assuming it did this from the beginning?

Yeah did it when I first picked it up. He switched a couple things in the valve body the second time I took it to him thinking it would fix it, but no. The thing that sucks is I get charged $130 every time I take it to him when he was the one that rebuilt it and I paid him $1100 to make sure it was right... Not very happy.

I do remember the transmission shop saying that the solenoids in it were a little "dirty". Could that cause the flare? Or would there be a 1st to 2nd flare if they were bad?

The trans pack shouldn't cause a flare. It doesn't work that way.

Your trans guy screwed up and doesn't know what's wrong. There is no reason for it to flare after the rebuild when it wasn't there before.

I've done a dozen 518's which is the same trans. Mine don't flare and the 518 has less electronic control than the 47. Maybe the band isn't adjusted right? The pack was dirty? Why didn't he clean it? That's BS. Check the how too section for the band adjustment. I forget which band it is now. Old Age

There are pretend trans specialists and there are specialists. Wish you were closer. . . .

He told me he did clean everything and make sure it was correct for a small fee of $1100... He's blaming it on my suncoast converter, but there is no slipping at all. I told him I bought that used from a guy and didn't even have 3,000 miles on it before he did a 5 speed swap. Feel like he's giving me the run-a-round. He checked band adjustments also and they were up to par.
