    Code: P2281?

So I may have to take the truck into a shop and let them try to figure out what’s going on, but I wanted to come on here to see if maybe I am missing something.

The truck is a 2017, and I installed a new DDP turbo and City Diesel actuator on it about a week ago.

I got everything buttoned up and took it for a test drive.

A few minutes into the drive, the truck threw a P2281 code and, of course, put it in limp mode.

I brought the truck back, checked over everything, and decided to make sure my turbo studs were tight.

I found one that was a bit loose, so I made sure all four of them were as tight as I could get them.

I cleared the code and went for another drive. The same thing happened.

I came back and decided to do a little looking around the internet for possible fixes.

I pulled off the EGR valve since I saw somewhere that it sometimes will cause that code to show if it gets clogged.

Everything seemed to be clear there.

I then invested in a smoke machine to try to find any leaks, which revealed that I hadn’t tightened my charge pipe clamps enough.

So I tightened those as tight as possible, and it didn’t seem like they were leaking anymore.

Once again, I cleared the code and took it for another drive.

It's the same thing as before.

I’m just not sure what else to check.

I don’t have much knowledge about stuff like this, although I’m trying to learn more, but if it’s something simple that I may have just overlooked, I don’t want to take it into a shop.

However, if it’s something that will need a lot of diagnosing done, I may have to bite the bullet and take it somewhere.

I know how to take off old parts and put on new ones, but this might be beyond my skills.

    Code: P2281?

A large intake leak or restriction usually sets this code.

It sounds like you have covered testing for an intake leak.

    Did you check for restrictions?

Start with the air box and filter.

    See the troubleshooting information attached.

Hopefully, you won’t have to take it to a shop, but please keep us posted on the final fix.

I haven’t checked the filter but it only has a few thousand miles on it.

    DUAL SNORKEL AIRBOX

    1. Please inspect the following:

    • Large debris blocking doors from moving fully.

    • Mud caked on doors.

    • Foam not sealing to fender or ram duct.

    • Broken linkage.

    • Water drain holes full of debris.

    • Air filter soaked with water.

    • Check back into fender for a collapsed or perforated tube (may have to remove fender well).

    Re: Code: P2281?

Well, I finally had a chance to look at my air intake this evening.

    Everything seems normal.

It’s an aftermarket kit, so the tube connecting the filter to the turbo is a solid plastic tube instead of that bendy one from the factory, so there weren’t any bends or kinks to cause a restriction there.

I double-checked the filter and blew some air through it to ensure it was clean.

The inside of the box was spotless, and the foam surrounding the fender and air duct opening seemed to be stuck solidly in place.

Nothing seems different than before I pulled the filter to start the turbo install.

Did you check the dryer-type vent duct behind the wheel well, inside the passenger side fender?

Sometimes, they get crushed and restricted.

I checked it, and it’s still perfectly round.

Since this happened immediately after changing the turbo and actuator, double-check all electrical connections to any sensors that you unplugged during the installation.

    It might be something simple.

This morning, while I’m at work, I’m reviewing the sensors I would have touched.

I don’t know enough about what each sensor does to make an educated guess as to whether or not one of them could be the culprit.

The only things that would have been unplugged were the actuator and the turbo speed sensor.

If I somehow messed up the wiring for the speed sensor, could it cause something like this to happen?

I assume you removed your air filter housing and intake to change the turbo.

There are two sensors on the turbo side of the air filter housing: an Intake Air Temp sensor and a Mass Air Flow sensor.

Double-check the connector on the Mass Air Flow sensor, as I believe this could also cause what you are experiencing.

It is the one closer to the turbo.
