Thread: Cummins Loping After Being Put In Gear On Cold Start Up?

Re: Cummins Loping After Being Put In Gear On Cold Start Up?

Yes, I have seen that even Quadzilla has a high idle switch that can reduce the timing to help with cold start and fuel economy.

I have seen that once you start adding more timing, it makes it harder to start when it's cold.

I didn't know that it would cause it to lope or if something was beginning to go bad. I will see about getting it and trying it out.

As for the block heater sadly it does not work I will be replacing it eventually.

Also it mainly did it while my grid heater was also not working now that I changed the relay and it's back up I notice it doesn't lope as much or I guess as hard?

So hopefully, it's just the timing in the cold weather causing it as I haven't noticed any leaks or smell of any sort, and cross-over tubes are on tight and injector hold downs.

If anything, I've noticed a significant increase in fuel mileage and have squeezed almost 300 miles on only 70 dollars I put in.

Can you post a video of what your truck is doing on cold starts?

    How do you send videos?

I have a video of it, but it’s not the best.

I had already started the truck, so I just waited a few hours, and it did do it but, like, barely; you can hear it in the video as soon as I put it in gear, just a bit.

Trucks currently at the shop for pinion seal and bearings, so won’t have it back till next week.

    Hopefully, this video helps.

Host your video on a server like Vimeo, YouTube, Facebook, Dropbox, etc.

Create your post and insert the video clip by clicking the “film strip” icon on the top toolbar and entering the URL.

Apologies to everyone for the very late response.

I just got my truck back from the shop for differential work, and I changed the fuel filters on my FASS pump cause it was overdue, and most of the issue has gone away.

It seems I have a video of the start-up now.

Can anybody tell me if that would be considered normal with everything I have?

Thanks for the update; it sounds and looks normal to me.

I noticed you have an ABS light illuminated.

Have you scanned the ABS Module for trouble codes?

    Sounds normal to me.

Hopefully, changing out the fuel filters will fix your issue.

Sadly, no, I haven't gotten around to it yet, but now that everything seems fine and is running well and solid, I plan on fixing all the minor stuff.

Re: Cummins Loping After Being Put In Gear On Cold Start Up?

    Update!

Sadly, it turns out it still does it on the first start.

I was able to catch it on video this time, which is this one

    https://youtube.com/shorts/4GUYsI7CS...3IzNQ-yZCiK44C

You can kind of hear it.

Then I switched it back to the park and went to normal, then I thought I’d try to reverse, and it did it again but more aggressively, which is this video.

    https://youtube.com/shorts/4GUYsI7CS...3RmAfK4klvZqKU

It seems only to do it after it has been sitting for a very long time and only does it for a short time.

The truck has never gotten too low in rpm’s or died, so I’m not sure if this would be normal with the stuff I have or not

Re: Cummins Loping After Being Put In Gear On Cold Start Up?

Sadly, it is still going on.

I guess I just didn’t wait long enough in that last clip.

I’ve had some tell me with the timing that it will do that after a “cold” start or that the rpm goes down when you put it in gear, which I know, but would the stuff I have cause it to lope like that, or do I have an issue?

    I’m not sure.
