    Battery Suggestions?

    Good day, everyone.

I have read many posts regarding batteries, as I'm in the market for some for my 12.

I have some Napa legend AGMs/(East Penn) from October 2019.

They are still holding, but I have had to charge them often, and my truck has been sitting in the garage for the last two winters.

I have noticed that with these AGM batteries, they don't like short trips.

They want the truck to be driven to keep the batteries charged.

But the quality of the battery's not very good these days.

My best batteries were Cat group 65 batteries/(Deka-East Penn) in my old Powerstroke.

I would get about five years out of them in the desert, and they were not AGM.

This current set from Napa has done ok but has had to live on the battery maintainer, and I've caught them many times right above that critical point and thrown the charger on because my truck sits a lot.

My charging system is working correctly.

I'm just trying to find a quality battery, if anyone is wondering.

I was going to go with the X2, but some on this forum have exhibited problems, and I don't believe it's the trucks; I think it's the battery.

I'm at the point where I'm just going to buy some Walmart ever-start platinum's for 360 for both and call it a day.

Spending all this money on batteries and having failure still is not feasible.

I have learned that AGM batteries need to be maintained, checked, and watched in cold weather.

I believe that's why my current set has lasted almost five years.

Any battery suggestions would be great.

One thing I look for is availability in case of a warranty.

I have the AGM X2 batteries, but I am not overly impressed with their ability to hold a charge or longevity.

I replaced the first set under warranty after three years, and if I am lucky, I may get another three years on this set.

My original OEM lead-acid batteries lasted 5 years.

I've been thinking that I might go back to the lead-acid flooded cell batteries next time.

The downside of the flooded cell is the possibility of leakage and corrosion.

That's my hesitation with the X2.

It seems that any AGM battery has to be topped off periodically, whereas the lead acid just goes until it dies.

I have an X2 in my 4Runner, and I had to charge it this winter when we had that cold snap.

Then, I took the battery to Batteries Plus, and they tested it.

They said it was still good, so I caught it just in time.

What's odd is that I drive the 4Runner every day.

My Cummins has some Napa AGM replacement sets.

When I drove to AK in 19, the day after working on my truck for a week, I went to remote start it, and the batteries were dead.

I took them to Napa, and they replaced them.

I've had the same set since.

I've just gotten used to throwing the noco on them once every 4-6 months.

I checked the voltage the other night; it was at 12.6 and 12.7.

They have been unplugged from the truck for about a month.

The agms seem to last, but it requires checking them often.

One thing I can say is that the AGM batteries can take some discharges like no other battery I've had, but what makes me nervous is that I take a 4000-mile drive working on my truck with 15k behind it, and after the trip the next day, the batteries are dead.

    They don't like the cold.

Maybe it just had a faulty battery; the charging system was fine then, and it is now.

$360 for some Walmart AGMs or x2s for $700.

    Sigh, decisions, decisions.

There is all the chatter about electric vehicles in the future, but we can't seem to find a reliable battery for what we have now, LOL.

    Yeah, no kidding.

Electric, this electric, but junk batteries are such a big scam.

    Re: Battery Suggestions?

I use Anti-Gravity lithium in all my stuff (Car, Boat, Golf Cart, Scooter)

I'd have to see if they make ones big enough for a diesel.

I just bought my truck, so it's running what it currently has.

Given that a garbage lead-acid battery that might last three years costs $250+, I'll gladly spend ~$600 on a battery that will last at least ten years.

These used to be the go-to for most aftermarket automotive stuff.

We used to run them a lot before lithium became more prevalent.

Much like Optimas, once upon a time they were the best, now I wouldn't even consider them.

I just checked on the Anti-Gravity Lithiums.

They are available for our trucks but expensive.

Full disclosure: I guess I'm cheating a little; I'm an AG dealer, so my cost is around $700 for a 60AH version of the H7/Group 94

$1100 would be tough to swallow, LOL.

Hopefully, within the next few years, lithium will continue to get cheaper, but given the current climate with EVs, there is no telling.
