    5 Inch Exhaust Sound Question

This post might make me sound like a complete noob, but I installed my RaceME on my 2015 RAM last night.

Today I took advantage of some decent weather, installed my whole 5-inch turbo back straight exhaust pipe, no muffler (it was more complicated than I thought), and finished it all up.

Finally, it got to fire the beast up, and its extremely quiet, like mind-boggling quiet, like quieter than I ever thought something (especially a 6.7L diesel) with a straight pipe could ever be, as in you could have a full-blown whisper conversation next to the exhaust tip.

It's as quiet as it was with the stock exhaust, you could idle it in a library and not get in trouble, so my question is, what gives?

I wasn't trying to be obnoxiously loud, but I expected it to give me some report back; mysecond-generationn trucks have been louder than this when they aren't even running.

I've read comments in forums about not installing a 5-inch because your neighbors will hate you, etc.; my next-door neighbor won't even hear me leave for work, I guarantee it.

I listened to dozens of youtube videos before deciding to buy the whole 5-inch andy truck sounds nothing like the videos I've heard online.

Have you guys been disappointed in the lack of sound after your exhaust installs?

Also, speaking of sounds, my engine is significantly quieter after the RaceME install.

It starts faster and shuts down harshly but idles super soft, and I only get a little timing noise at higher RPMs.

Usually, the high-pitched squeal (jet engine sound) annoys the neighbors.

This sound is generated during cold weather and starts with the exhaust brake on.

My understanding is the 5” exhaust will produce a deeper sound, and both 4” and 5” straight pipe without muffler or resonator will create an annoying drone in the cab.

I agree the normal idle with straight pipes is quieter than expected.

Yes, with the EB on, it does scream a little bit.

So these videos I've seen online of 4th gens with 5-inch exhausts sound so nice; what's the secret?

Indeed, not everyone on youtube has a 2nd Gen turbo swap.

    Weird.

Once upon a time, I had the same setup, and it was rowdy.

Did you flash the basic or advanced tuning?

I did the same 5" TBE to my 2018, and it was not as loud as I expected.

I also had a Gen2 that the neighbors hated.

Now put it under a good load that changes.

I ended up installing the 30" muffler to remove the raspy sound you get from straight pipes.

Now it is a deep, low tone, and the wife is much happier on road trips.

It is noticeable at hwy speeds empty but not like the old Gen2.

5" systems are not as loud as the 4" systems, from my experience, but the sound is different.

Unless you are running a big hp, there is no performance difference.

It is a preference at that point.

I felt the same when I deleted my truck.

I went with a 4" exhaust / Aero turbine muffler.

I think the 6.7s sound smoother and quieter overall than the 5.9s.

The 6.7s also, to me, have a deeper sound all around.

The 5.9 I had was louder than my 6.7 sitting in the driveway.

It sounds much louder if I use the 12V RT tune on my truck.

Re: 5 Inch Exhaust Sound Question

I am running 5" on mine, but I do have a muffler (FLO~PRO).

I originally had 5" from the downpipe, but I had to go to a 4" downpipe stepped up to 5" when I installed my 2nd gen swap.

I only know of one place to get a 5" downpipe for a 2nd gen swap, but the space between the engine and frame would make it very difficult to install and not rattle on something.

It sounds like a Peterbilt coming down the road (Especially since I am rowing gears), but not too loud, and no drone.
