It doesn’t look that damaged from the pic, but pics are deceiving sometimes.

I thought about it, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night, given the 68RFE’s reliability.

    Live and learn, I guess?

Live and learn I did today.

Spent 8 hours changing out front/rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, then trans fluid.

I bought Mag Hytec, and instructions say torque to 7-9 ft/lbs well.

Snapped a bolt in the housing.

Spent 3 hours getting that out.

Put the old pan back on and gonna save the mag hytec for next time.

Does anyone know of bolt alternatives for those things?

I'm sorry to hear you ran into problems.

They must have been some very low grade and poor quality bolts to break off with 7-9 ft/lbs.

I would check locally for the same length and thread in a grade 8 just to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

You may want to double-check your torque wrench calibration by comparing it with another one.

Set up a bolt and nut in a vice to compare them.

For an accurate torque, choose a wrench that puts your desired setting in the middle of the range. A 20-200 inch/lbs wrench would be ideal.

How much fluid did you end up using with the stock pan?

    Those are good ideas.

I was thrown off my game a little cause I went onto the AF base to use the auto hobby shop (they have lifts, and I didn’t want to lay on my back in the driveway).

I assumed they had all the tools I’d need, but I definitely have better options at home, like a calibrated inch lbs torque wrench.

I’d never even used the auto hobby shop when I was in, and I thought I’d try it since the website says there are mechanics on duty who will help you if needed; they even have paid services.

These guys just sat around smoking, and when I would ask for a specialized tool, they’d hand it to me and say good luck.

I guess I deserve not to have helped cause it taught me a lesson.

As for fluid, I was about to be kicked out because they closed for the evening and just dumped 6 quarts in.

I’m sure it’s a little low, but I had good line pressure, temps, and shifting for my 15-minute drive home.

    I was exhausted.

I’ll check again today and finish topping it off.

I got back in 8.3 qts using a temp-to-dipstick graph I found online.

At 170 degrees, it should be at the bottom edge of the top hot hole.

    Shifts phenomenally. ?
