    68RFE Trans Maintenance?

The previous owner had the trans replaced in my truck at 75k miles.

I'm currently at 162k on the truck.

I've had my truck for 97k miles.

It hasn't towed heavily since I've owned it, but I'm curious when I should get a service done on it (fluid/filter change) or anything else.

    It lost weight around 112k.

She still shifts fine and doesn't leak or anything.

I'm just trying to make sure it stays that way, LOL.

I would go ahead and change the transmission fluid and filter, it’s due every 120K miles or 96 months anyway. For police, fleet, or frequent trailer towing. service 60K miles or 48 months.

I would go ahead and change the fluid and filter out.

For fluid and filters, I would say get the metal nipple for the spin-on filter as well ($20).

Follow the torque specs for the pan filter and the spin-on filter.

Just oil the O-ring and snug it up like an oil filter.

    Use Mopar OE filters only.

Use any ATF+4 (I used Valvoline)

If you want to make future fluid changes easier, you can buy a Dorman brand OEM replacement pan (stock capacity, more profound is not needed), which comes with a drain plug, on Amazon for about $55.00.

Use the OEM replaceable or LubeLocker gasket if you don't want to go the RTV route when you put the pan back on.

    Resurrection of an old thread.

I’m changing the transmission fluid on my 68RFE for the first time and have additional questions.

1: if I drop the pan and change the filters, will I only need 7 quarts?

I bought a Mag Hytec pan and plan on buying 10 qts to be safe.

Given the extra fluid, at what point would you run the truck and start checking the fluid level?

I don’t want to run it low, right?

    2: Do I need a quick relearn?

The truck is 38k miles, and it is the first time the trans fluid has been changed.

Nothing wrong with it that I know of.

The truck does shift firm due to tuning.

    Thanks, everyone!

You may cut it close depending on how long you allow the transmission to drain and how much extra capacity the new oil pan has.

Make sure the truck is on level ground before draining.

No quick relearn is necessary after the filter and fluid change.

The best practice is to measure the amount of fluid removed and refill with the same amount plus the extra capacity of the new pan.

Warm up the transmission fluid and check the level.

    Ok, thanks!

Now I just bent the filter and am trying to get the plastic nipple off.

I used a 1/2” hex socket and a rubber filter strap.

I’m guessing I placed the strap in the wrong spot?

Now I have to pay dealer pricing for a filter cause I’ve got to get this done tomorrow.

To be honest, if that filter is not cracked, I believe it would be okay to use.

It doesn’t look that damaged from the pic, but pics are deceiving sometimes.
