    3.42 Gears In A RAM 3500?

Both my '06 Single wheel G56 and '17 Dually 68RFE were 3.73 gears.

She was pulled with no problems at all.

I am looking at a '15 single wheel with 3.42 gears and 68RFE.

I am not sure why someone would want 3.42in a 3500 anyway.

So the question for those with experience with 3.42 is how does it pull?

I'm not a daily puller, but I have a 5th wheel camper and a gooseneck for my tractor and whatever else.

    Thanks for the responses!

I have those gears in my 2016 3500 G56 35x12.50 tires and never had any issues.

    I bought the truck new.

Before regear, you think it's okay.

After regear, you wonder why you waited so long to change it.

If you do a ton of unloaded highway miles, don't regear it.

If it lives, it's a life-loaded heavy or towing regear.

    My dually has 3.73 gears.

The advantage is increased towing capacity and easier transmission when moving from a stop.

The disadvantage is slightly less MPG at highway speeds.

The 3.42 gears will be harder on your transmission especially when towing heavy.

Having towed with both 4:10 and 3:42’s on the same trailers, as long as you understand that it will be slower to take off from a dead stop, especially on hills, you can do it.

However, if towing most of the time, go for 3:73 or 4:10. I have never regretted returning to 4:10 gears.

    2016 G56 runs 2000 rpm at 73-74 mph.

    She tows amazingly at 70.

I've towed plenty of heavy, and the OEM setup handled 30k combined well.

I would hold speed even on Saluda grade (6%) and I 40 through Tennesee.

Even more so once deleting and tuning.

Like others, about 3.42 is okay; I think they need to regulate the throttle.

The engine is more than willing to treat the transmission as a consumable, but I accept running with the slow trucks.

    Thanks for everyone’s response!

Thinking I’m a little scared of the extra strain on the tranny starting and pulling the hills with the 3.42s.

    Just not sure!

    Thanks.

Stay out of 5-6 gear when towing; you probably won't see much issue.

Tow in OD, and you'll burn it up regardless of gearing.

    Re: 3.42 Gears In A RAM 3500?

Imo 3.42s suck with the auto trans and it's worth it to swap them out. The G56 has lower internal gearing and it's fine with 3.42s. I swapped mine out for 4.10s and love them.
