2019+ Hydraulic Lifter Issues - How Widespread?

Does this issue eventually affect all of these trucks?

I have a 2022 SO that just passed 100,000 miles.

I am hearing an occasional noise. It could be something else, but I am getting worried.

Does anyone else have higher miles with good luck?

Is there a way to check the cam for wear without disassembly?

At 100k miles, you might verify and or check the valve lash.

I double checked mine a while back and adjusted them, the motor is much quieter up top.

As @Corkey stated, this is good advice for a pre-2019 with solid lifters.

Hopefully, someone with a high mileage 2019+ will chime in with their experience.

Do the hydraulic lifters need adjusting?

I thought it was the pre-hydro versions.

There is no adjustment required for the hydraulic lifters.

    Following.

I have a 2021 with 65k miles, and I've heard the so-called typewriter ticks sporadically; I've invested a lot of money into this truck, and she almost paid off trying to decide whether to keep it or sell it to avoid future issues if it is the lifters I hear the repairs are more than 10k converting them back to the nonhydraulic lifters.

If left alone, is this going to destroy the truck?

Most people say it's a diesel, and they are noisy, but I feel there is more to this!

As the original poster has stated, I'd like to know if this is detectable or can be confirmed any other way, like oil testing, etc.

My 2022 has 48K, and it intermittently has the lifter noise.

Sad, pulling the head was not on my list of things I expected to have to do.

    Hello,
WoW seeing the redesigned engine Cummins has produced is sad!
Here is a few vids of taking apart and the upgrades.
REALLY Look at the Cummins Roller in the lifter vid where the roller is cut to access it, Notice NO Needle bearings! OMG Crap Lifter design.
If your really mechanically inclined I believe can be done in home environment.
If doing in chassis would take multiple STRONG magnets to hold lifter up to remove cam and when reinstalling. Note this is while head is still on engine.
In videos is for engine removed and reason Hi labor amount. But first vid is Lifter tear down Notice the ROLLER from Ford Vs Ram.
New style is to convert to solid lifter plunger kit.
If you convert before Heavy damage to cam would reduce cost by approx 1k.
For Myself I would hope given time CRAN or CROWER cams manufacture would Produce a Lifter with design like Ford or other Race roller cam use in Gas engines. Conversion uses stock lifter. Would always start with new lifters anyway. BUT still may fail!! STOCK Sucks!!

Edit: Hamilton has I think best conversion!

    WOW Pan ON!!

DO Not forget to with the savings of in chassis repairs DO the DUMP newer design pump and convert to a CP3 Pump. make your truck bullet proof.

Re: 2019+ Hydraulic Lifter Issues - How Widespread?

This is exactly why I only own 4th gens. Why take a perfectly good motor and screw with it just for convenience in the fact that you don't have to adjust valve lash anymore but instead the motors fail before 100k miles when you need to possibly adjust your valve lash. That is a very piss poor design by cummins. I feel bad for anyone who buys a fifth gen for what trucks cost nowadays only to have to turn around and pay thousands to correct it with the prior design solid lifters and void your warranty. I know I don't have money like that to gamble and sure some trucks might live longer than others but I will keep my solid lifters.

    Hello,
It's really just something to address as the Ram F****Up a good thing! But is repairable. I would convert to Hamilton Solid lifter flat tappet design and NEVER reuse or install New Failed Lifter design seeing how the are made. Metal AXES and NO Roller needle bearings Like I use in My ROLLER cams in my Drag Boat or other race engines.
Seeing able to do IN FRAME and up grade the lazy cam as well! Plus Plus!!!
Second is to Convert the Other Failure Pump to a CP3 and then have a truck last forever!
I will never Upgrade to Newer as I like work horse I presently have.

MAYBE I will be on the Look out for these failures and repair and resell!! Opportunity for a tech to make some extra cash!
