Thread: Boost Tube Boot Keeps Falling Off?

Boost Tube Boot Keeps Falling Off?

    Hey everyone.

We are on a 3 week camping vacation.

We have a 42ft fifth wheel weighing 16k, and I am towing with a 2015 ram 3500 dually.

I have recently upgraded to banks intercooler, boost tubes, and ram air. I have compound turbos on my truck.

on our way to South Dakota, I am going up a mountain and all of the sudden “whoosh” and boost loss.

I pull over and find that boot on the hot side of turbo connecting to intercooler came off.

my installer put 3 inch spring-loaded t-bolt clamp and torqued to spec. I have pushed maybe 25 psi on my separately installed gauge. Level 0 tune.

this was only the start of my issues.

Over the last 5 days, the boot came off probably around 10 times.

I have tried replacing claims (both a new 3 inch, 2.75 inches, and even tried two 3-inch clamps)

Tried using gorilla tape to create additional surface to clamp.

The 3-inch t bolt would clamp all the way.

Took it to Firestone to have a “technician” fix it.

The boot came off on my drive back to the camp site.

Here is where I am now.

I bought some red rescue tape (silicone wrap) and tightened a 3 inch clamp as tight as reasonable without stripping the nut.

I am running less than 10 psi of boost, and it’s gotten me safely.

At 15, the boot has been falling off. Yes, annoying going 30 mph up a hill, but I’m tired of repairing on the side of the road.

Do you have any recommendations? I’m out of ideas.

The current build seems to hold, but I’m always nervous pushing beyond 10 psi.

Im currently in Salt Lake City and will be leaving for Boise on Tuesday.

If there are any shops or mechanics you recommend, I would be happy to reach out to them.

Some pics for you to see of my encounters with the boost boot.

It looks like your pipe might not be long enough and might not have enough for the boot to grab onto.

If it's towards the edge too much, I've seen boots blow off; it's just my observation from the pictures you posted.

if that’s the case, I guess I may need to go pack to stock intercooler and pusher tubes.

im going to visit a couple diesel shops around town tomorrow and see if they have any solutions. It will be a pain driving back home to Seattle and having to reinstall the tubes multiple times a day.

Is there enough room for an additional clamp so you can get home?

Is it only blowing off just on that one end constantly?

You should have a small, flared piece on the pipe that the boot\clamp should be hard to blow past that to shoot the boot off.

I believe the red boost tube pipe does have a flare and it’s holding on solid. It’s the turbo side that keeps coming off the boot. I think the boot may need to replaced from having been constantly bent from blowing off. The seam is starting to show wear as it is coming on and being reinstalled back.

I don’t know if the boot is too small and so as it contracts from heat and movement, the silicone ends up sliding off the turbo of what. Firestone installed with two clamps and it slide right off before I can even get home from their shop. It felt like the second clamp was forcing it off more by squeezing it off.

Looking at the photos it looks like the intrecooler pipe is not lined up with the turbo. I am thinking the offset taken up by the hose may be contributing to the issue.

I think you this is probably it. It tends to come slip from the bottom side and out. I have to apply pressure to push the tube down to get it to hold. So maybe the alignment of the boost tube is creating additional pressure for the boot.
