Best Clutch Kit With Flywheel To Buy NV4500?

    Hi friends, I just bought a 97 3500 2wd with an NV4500 5 speed.

It's making a racket in the bellhousing area with a loud clacking noise similar to an engine knock.

I suspect the previous owner did a hack job on replacing the clutch, and a lot of things came apart inside.

I stuck an inspection camera inside the slit in the bottom of the bellhousing and it looks like a beaver chewed all the teeth off of the starter ring and there's washers and bolts laying in there as well.

I'm in need of advice on which clutch kit or brand works best for these trucks as this is the first manual Cummins I've ever purchased, and I'm for sure going to need a new flywheel.

I plan to maybe do some fuel modifications to the p pump, but nothing crazy.

Just want to end up with a clutch that's quiet and shifts smoothly.

    Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the bolts are backed off the flywheel.

    That's my guess, also.

I'm sure someone reused and or over-torqued them.

Or just forgot to tighten them.

I bought an old 73 Ford F-250 years ago that someone put a clutch in, but only hand tighten the flywheel bolts.

Fortunately, I caught it in time after I bought it and torqued them back to specs.

I would suggest a Valair 13” hd organic setup; there is no need to get spendy with mostly stock setup.

I used this with great success.

My 01 has this, which has held up well with the edge juice and lots of towing and hauling.

Also, replace the rear main seal while in there as well.

2021 Ram 3500 DRW, H.O., bypass oil filtration, bypass coolant filtration, S&B CAI, 4:10’s
    2wd low loc kit.
Reacquired 2001 3500, 5.9 nv4500, dually cab and chassis, 5” straight pipe, edge juice w/attitude. Otherwise all stock…..for now.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I have been looking at the Valair clutches since they seem the most mentioned brand on almost every website I visit.

My brother has a 2005 ZF6 Duramax, and he put a South Bend dual disk in it.

It rattles like crazy, and you can even hear the rattle over the exhaust sound.

I plan on driving/towing heavily with it, so I have no huge horsepower plans in the future.
