Thread: 68RFE Safe Shift RPM?

    68RFE Safe Shift RPM?

I’m curious about how everyone is taking their 68RFE to rpm-wise.

I think I am being a bit paranoid since smoking my original trans.

I now have a Jasper with the extra clutches for 5 and 6 with the billet triple disc torque converter.

Maybe I am paranoid, but I run the truck on a 120HP RaceME box tune, and it doesn’t have the trans tuning yet, but that’s soon to come.

However, what got me on this topic is watching the truck gauge values getting on the highway is the only time I start to build up to and past 10 psi of boost, but I tend to let out because I’m paranoid about being hard on the trans when shifting into 5 and 6.

And at that PSI, I’m under 50% throttle and 1800 rpm.

What does everyone recommend as a safe point to take the rpm and throttle percent to without hurting the trans?

    Sorry for the long story.

I feel the truck needs more rpm and throttle to start building boost, but I am unsure how much I can push the trans-load.

You have the goodies to support additional power.

The tuning will only change the stock shift points and increase the line pressure to help engage the clutches for less slip.

Slip = generated heat, which the 68RFE hates.

If you have no TCM tuning, you're running on stock parameters.

If you finish your relearn process, you're okay with hitting the skinny pedal.

Trans tuning will significantly help if you seek the 150 to 200hp setting.

    That makes me feel better!

I have been hesitant to get on it at all.

    I appreciate the input.

Also, when I had the trans done, I installed the thermal bypass from RevMax.

    What a world of difference!

Unfortunately, the RaceME Ultra box tuning leaves much to be desired.

    Re: 68RFE Safe Shift RPM?

When I had a stock 68RFE, I ran the 200hp tune all the time.

I did baby it for the most part, but from time to time, I let it breathe.

I did see over 34lbs of boost on quite a few occasions.

Some are not on purpose, LOL.

Almost 70k miles never had any issues.

The truck and trans seemed to like the higher RPM shift.

Maybe not a higher boost, but a higher RPM seemed better and smoother.

Dont drive it like you stole it all the time; you should be good.

15 20lbs boost, no problems at all.

I noticed that shifting at around 1800-2000 rpm also smoothed things out a bit.

As everyone has told me, the stock tunes are rough with the RaceME.

I was late to the party to have Ray tune the truck and trans because a few parts fell off during a road trip, LOL.

Now I’m rather stuck with the RaceME weight loss tunes.

I feel some good tunes would make the little things that much better.

I'm confident that the box tunes from RaceME are what smoked my transmission.

Yeah, they definitely shift like junk.

The 4th lock up is not consistent at all!
