Thread: Wheel Failure?

    Wheel Failure?

Not mine, but a friend in the desert in So Cal.

Does anyone have any idea how this happened?

I have my theories, but I wanted to see what everyone thinks.

Failed wheel bearing, or either it was serviced, and the axle nut wasn’t put on properly, would be my guess.

    Wheel Failure?

Yeah, my theory is that those factory bearings have never seen grease.

I replaced all 4 spindles on my last trailer with greaseable ones to prevent this.

    Pack your bearings, folks!

Based on how the spindle looks it was hit with a cutting torch, I agree with what you said.

There are only two real possible options.

Agree looks like a lack of grease in this case.

I have the EZ Lube drilled spindles on my fifth wheel, but you have to be careful not to over-grease and blow the seals.

I prefer to hand-pack my bearings and inspect them annually.

    Wheel Failure?

Hello, my 2c trailer brakes applied while driving?

The drum looks odd in color, and the brake shoes are dry and have burned flacking material.

If it were constant, the brake would overheat the drum, causing failure seals, grease to run out, and bearing failure.

Look around axle tubes for excess grease should be a tall tale of seal then bearing.
