what i did to fix my overheating issues. 99 degree here in ga. while on highway was hitting 230 temps when boosting. then it would come down and up. scared me.. i was thinking thermostat but i wanted to fix this issue right off the rip.
new temps using 180 stat. 175-185 boosting
1. removed the coolant reservoir bottle and cleaned it out. bendable foam brush from amazon. i used gasoline to get oil residue from blown gasket last year. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087GL8HBG...t_details&th=1
2. New Cummins/stant 180 thermostat. probably go to 190 in winter. I'm not sure yet.
3. fleetguard restore cleaner
4. Bulletproof diesel billet water pump. https://bulletproofdiesel.com/collections/diesel-water-pumps/products/cummins-water-pump-5-9-6-7?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium={adname}&utm_campa ign={campaignname}&utm_content={adgroupname}&utm_k eyword=&utm_matchtype=&campaign_id=17861334474&ad_ group_id=&ad_id=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwzIK1Bh AuEiwAHQmU3njV57v7_tTxiS2jKl4lXz73bHbZROxZEg9hYF-ABPeKDYWghuilyhoCYjsQAvD_BwE
5. new clamps- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FYGH3SJ...t_details&th=1
I cleaned out the res bottle and then drained the system. i pulled the lower hose and not the crap radiator plug.
Put restore and tap water in and run it for 2 hours after up to temp.180+ drained system, fill with tap water, and run at temp for 5 minutes. take out thermostat and pump. i had a motorad 190 in there. disappointing after all the money i spent at shop, they put in an autozone thermostat.
I flushed the system through stat port, pump hole, and radiator for 10 minutes. then for overkill, i flushed with 10 gallons of distilled water. replaced thermostat with cummins 180, new billet pump. this pump is milled to a tight fit man! It's an awesome pump!!
Filled with zerex G-05 concentrate and distilled water. 50/50, of course. burp it and run it.
So what fixed it? everything. restore cleaned it up great. new stat is opening properly, and that pump is no joke. I hope this helps someone.
