Thread: Gear Swap?

  1. Top Of Page | #1

    Gear Swap?

I’m thinking of going 4.10 or 4.11 gears with some 37’s.

The goal is to do some easy trails at the uhwarrie forrest in NC.

    I currently have 35” tires on a 17” +18 offset wheel.

I dont want to tear up my trans with the upsized tires.

I have a Thuren suspension +2 front and +0.5 rear coming Wednesday.

My question relates to 4wd and lockers or limited slip.

When I contacted a few shops near me, the one I got the best feeling with was asking if I wanted to add lockers.

I “think” when I’ve spun the tires or done a little burn out both rear tires spin.

So I don’t know if I have any type of LSD or if adding rear lockers would be worth it?

My 4th switch is labeled 4wd lock and 4wd low.

I’m kinda assuming that’s the E-lock controlled by braking by the computer?

I mean, if I’m going to be paying for the labor for gears anyway.

Is it something that is considered a “while you’re in there”?

Also, has anyone gone from 3.41 to 4.11 and had to change the carrier?

They said it may have to me swapped, which would increase the cost, but they don’t know for sure without taking a look at it.

I’ve been thinking about doing the exact same thing.

I'm interested to see what you end up doing.

Sorry I’m of no help here!

    Re: Gear Swap?

    Some members have done so.

I would look at 4.30, maybe even 4.56.

    I have 3.73 and will go to 4.11, but I have 35's.

    If I had 37's, I would go 4.30 or 4.56.

    Re: Gear Swap?

I had 3.73's and swapped out to 4.56's on 37's.

    Seriously, I couldn't be happier.

Since you have a stock higher ratio on 35's, I would look into the 4.11's or 4.30's.

Going to 4.56s on 35s will throw you high rpm's at 60mph to where you won't appreciate the mileage.

Nitro is a great company to look at, as well as Yukon.

I wanted the 4.30's from Nitro, but they had a wicked backorder.

They even recommended going to Yukon, which is their competitor.

The exact product; you're just paying for a Nike price "straight from the sales rep."

It depends on who installs the gears and gets the toe and heel meshing correctly.

If you go with Yukon, buy the lifetime warranty for an additional $100 or $140 and register your product the same day you receive it online.

Labor obviously won't be covered; everything else will be for the lifetime it's registered under your name.

    Are you an avid offroader?

You don't need lockers on the easy trails in uwharrie.

You need lockers if you'll be in deep mud, rocks, or where you'll have wheels off the ground.

If you want to add them, then yes, while you're regearing is the time to do it.

I'll just add a spod or some kind of aftermarket switching device to control them if you get electric lockers, or are you thinking air lockers.

I don't even know what's available for these because I wheel a Jeep.

I have 4.10s on my 2500 with 35's.glad I did it with 37's, and the RevMax requires 4.10 or 4.30, so either way, you're in the recommended range.

    Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking if 4.1 was good for 35 or 37, then in the future, if I ever go back to 35” tires, I won’t be too out of the RPM range in the freeway.

I didn’t ask the shop what brand gears they usually use.

I think my next step will be to make an appointment and get some more solid information from them.

I’m definitely not an avid off-roader.

Haven’t even really done it much at all.

Just want to be prepared and not look like a dummy taking my heavy truck on the jeep trails unprepared.

I'm still a bit confused as to what’s actually in there now, since the switch says 4-lock. Is there a factory E-locker that came in these trucks?

    Enter in your VIN here.

    https://FCAgroup.my.site.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing

It'll show you every single thing your rig came with from the factory.

    Thank you!

Looks like I have open diffs.

It seems weird because it does so well in ice/snow.

I guess the weight helps with that.

    CONVENTIONAL DIFFERENTIAL FRT AXLE
    CONVENTIONAL DIFFERENTIAL REAR AXLE

I'm leaning towards adding a limited slip to the rear at least now.

    What do you actually drive?

A regular diesel 2500 or a power wagon? is this switch you're talking about the 4 wheel drive switch in the cab?

    What year is your truck?
