    Removing 5th wheel rails

Gents i am trying to remove the rails for the 5th wheel that came on the truck. I was curious in the pic there are L brackets bolted to the frame are those from rail install ? Will it hurt if i pull them out? I took one of the nuts off and cant figure out how the stud is there. Are the studs welded on? Thanks in advance and the reason i am removing them is to get the bed lined

Sorry, never had a 5th and never looked at how it was installed. But if I can ask. How are the L's laying under the bed ? Are they seperate from the bed and looks like it's part of the 5th ? From what little I know, if there welded, it's because the owner wanted it. I'm with the understanding that the 5th is bolted on, not welded. But as I said I never owned a 5th. And where does it seem like it's welded ? The bolt heads, nuts ? I'd look it over and determine if it's structurally needed, and if not remove if you have no use for it. A picture of the under side of the bed would help.

I will take better pics later after work. Those L brackets are bolted to the frame and go up and turn so the bolt holding the rail down are directly over the frame. The nuts i took off and they are just threaded bolts sticking out but do not come out on the other side of the frame rail.. will take better pictures

I will get better pics whwn its light out tomorrow . But i circled the L brackets i was talking about. Those go up and bend inward toward the center on the truck they are only about 3 or 4 inchs on top but thats where the rail bolts down too. The other issue i was asking about was the two nuts on each bracket you see are fastened to the frame some how.. they do not go through to the other side of the frame, thats why with out pulling the bracket i think it might be welded behind the bracket

If your going to reinstall the 5th wheel plates you can leave the L brackets as for the bolts that secure the L brackets they should be splined like a wheel lug stud just remove fastener and bracket and pound it out but like I said if you plan on still using the 5th wheel then leave anything under the bed in its place

    Probably working on something

    Removing 5th wheel rails

Exactly like my old truck you could just leave them or take them off The setup I had those bolts holding the L bracket on they are splined studs with a round head and also the nuts are lock nuts so they will be tight but you shouldn't have to hold the stud. You should be able to just unscrew the nut and remove bracket then pound stud out

    Probably working on something

    Re: Removing 5th wheel rails

As it was stated earlier they are held in place like a wheel stud is held in. I would just let them in place unless it bothers you.
