    2013 carrier bearing help

I went this weekend to pick up a camper (7 hrs away) and all the way home thought i was messing up my trans. It shudders horribly from 1-10mph, no problems after that. After getting home and doing some google fu, i believe it to be the carrier bearing. I can't seem to find one (at least not for certain) for a 2013 ram 3500. I went by oreilly to see if i was just stupid or something and they don't have a listing for one. So does anyone know where to find one? Or a stronger replacement that fits?

I'm going to feel extra dumb if there isnt a carrier on my truck. But i swear when i was under it i remember complaining that it had a 2 piece shaft like my last one.

Here's a pic of the new camper to explain the pucker factor with the shutter i was experiencing

It's more likely a pinion bearing. you are going to have to open it up. You can't depend on the internet. There's allot of bad info out there. Further, if you haven't the tools to do this, DON'T! I've done several American rears already. It takes some pretty heavy pullers to do the carrier bearings. To buy the tools, it will cost more than sending it to a shop. Chevy/GMC uses the same rear. American Rear was owned by GM until a few years ago.

Describe in more detail what you are feeling. How many miles on the truck? What about higher speeds? Is it 2WD or 4WD. Come on man. Fill in a bunch of blanks.

Also Jack up the rear wheels and check for looseness in the bearings. (Side play) Check for oil leaking out of the pinion and Axle seals. Usually a good clue. It could be something as simple as a U-Joint.

    2003- 3500 RWD Automatic.
S & B intake, BD Intercooler, Pusher Air Horn, MM3 Double R Tuning, Turbo Timer, electric Flex-a-lite fans, FASS 95,
50 HP tips, upgrade to 351 turbo, 3.42 gears, Twin air compressors, air bags, Remote dual oil filters, Hellwig sway bar, Front Winch. Home made Fuel Heater, BD Exhaust brake with Torque Lock. Tons of TLC

Sorry i'm guessing my sig doesnt come through on tapatalk (still new to this) 2013 ram 3500 srw, 68RFE, 3.42 gears 96k miles. Fully deleted(7/16) with an MM3 from ray, with trans tuning.

Its a kind of stuttering from a stop while towing the camper only (16-17k). Its not bad enough to shake the truck or anything, just pretty noticeable. Once past roughly 10mph it stops stuttering and has no other vibrations or issues. I can even lock it down to first and run it on up in rpms, or let it shift to second and its the same reaction. So its totally speed related not a specific gear. It has absolutely none of these characteristics unloaded, my wife and i had tons of running to do today and it performed beautifully unloaded, i'm even an honest believer at this point that hooking it to that trailer yesterday cleaned out the cobwebs, it feels like a new truck now(unloaded)

I wasnt totally relying on internet wisdom, my buddy had the same exact situation on an older dodge he had and said it was the carrier bearing when i described my situation, before i even told him what i had read. My last dodge had a 1 piece since i obliterated the carrier in it the day i bought it (pulling someone out at the beach with a harsh lesson in wheel hop, i was young and dumb)

And yes i will likely be taking it to a shop since my normal mechanic/buddy is down injured currently, just trying to get a real solid idea of what it is, what the parts may cost, and all that info before getting gouged somewhere

OK It's time you changed the rear oil anyway. LOL I suggest you get your oil and take the cover off just to be sure. Look on the magnet for metal chips. I think you need 7 quarts of gear oil. I used Mobil 1 the last time. But I also used the Archoil AR9100 oil modifier. I could feel the difference in the rear temperature when I used it. You're call on that.

Still check the rear wheel bearings and check the seals. Inspect the U Joints. I can't feel it, but I don't want to just throw money at it either. I'm leaninging towards a possible U Joint anyway. With that much weight on the rear, the geometry changes. With that much weight. a weak joint could be the problem and a cheap fix. But for piece of mind, change the rear anyway.

Thank you for all the info, if it'll stop raining long enough today i'm going to climb up under there and poke around. I'm still undecided just how far i personally am willing to disassemble anything on it. I told myself when i got this truck i would leave it to the pros other than the most trivial of maintenance. Hopefully when i can get under it some slop will stand out somewhere. But i will definitely jack up the rear and do some tugging as you suggested. Either way i will report back once its solved so future folks can see what it turned out to be.

Still really tempted to drop the money on a one piece shaft for it, but trying not to unload any major cash after buying the camper

I am such a duh. I was thinking of the carrier in the rear. Didn't realize you had a split shaft. Well that too with the U Joints. I was thinking the rear end carrier. I've done that before. But what I said above was true too. LOL You must have a standard cab long bed
    As I recall, that's a dealer part.

    Re: 2013 carrier bearing help

Just wanted to drop a line for an update. My carrier bearing nor anything else was bad, except the shaft alignment being squatted so bad. I already had airbags on the way when I had originally posted my question simply because the truck squatted far more than I expected when I bought the camper. I put them on the truck friday and finally got a chance to drag the trailer around town today to test drive it. Not a single shimmy, shake, or shutter was felt.

Now something else I learned in my hunt for a carrier bearing for a 2013 ram 3500.... they DON'T sell one. Only an entire new shaft assembly with the bearing on it. Even the dealership was shocked at how ridiculous that was. So word of advice if you do have one go bad... get online and get that upgraded 1 pc aluminum shaft for $725 + shipping, and never look back.

Just glad my situation was a simple one and that air bags remedied the situation.
