    Cold start engine ticking

I just changed my first oil change and I'm using rotella 15w40. Now when I start my engine on a cold start I hear weird random ticks from the motor that go away after some time. It's not very consistent it's just random ticks. It's not cold at all where I am at weather has been around upper 80's. Truck is a 2016 dodge 2500 6.7 thanks

Mine does that 2 for about 20 seconds. Does the grid heater make a ticking sound?

A taste more info is needed:
Is it just when you first start ?
How long in time, say in seconds ?
Has it just been when using this oil only ?
    Brand filter ?

You're in texas and yes, 15w-40 is fine, but can cause a slight ticking sound until oil has fully circulated and established a film around all parts. This can take a few seconds, but should stop after that. Also, even in a hot area, if left between shutting down and start up is enough for the oil to drain from heads enough, it can cause this. If so, might consider another brand oil for next change to verify it was oil. Filters usually don't cause this, but should be factored in until proven not being the issue.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I was understanding that the newer trucks came with Sync oil and it is highy recommend staying with it. What is the warrantee saying on this ?

Mine does it only at start up for 30 seconds or so I think this next oil change I'm going to go to synthetic and see if that helps.

There could be some clicking from the head due to the very thin film of oil on the bearings and such. But should quiet soon after start. If I leave my engine off for a while, mine chicks for a few seconds. But this shouldn' happen if after shutting it down from a long or short trip and restart somewhat soon after. The film needed to protect the bearings should be still there. Over night or off for days will allow the film to thin out or be gone from the needed area, but a good pump and proper oil will refill the areas and protect the metals within seconds. Some may disagree, but I prefer a 5w-40 sync for my vehicles so it flow faster and protects metals quicker. And no matter what the weather is, it's covered. But you need to decide what your preference is.

Yes just on first start when engine is cold.

Does if for about 30 seconds sometimes a bit longer

It was the first oil change, im using 15w40 rotella. The owners manual said if I live where ambient temps don't reach below 0 to use 15w40. If it is below 0 to use 5w40. Never even gets close to being that cold where I live.

I am using the fleetguard stratapore oil filter

Also, a good Synthetic oil will 'cling' to metal parts better, so there's more protection at startup. Amsoil works well for me.
